Caucasian Rug
Caucasian Rug
Why African American? Why can't I just be an American?
I don't understand why I can't refer to myself as an American (but I do anyway). If I call myself an American around a black person, they get angry. Society wants people like me to be labeled as an African American. On the other hand, the Caucasians are simply Americans. Why must they not call themselves European American? Why must I also sweep my Native Americans under the rug? What about them? My Native American ancestors are only three generations back, my African ancestors are further back in generations. I love all my ancestors. I think it's not fair to claim only one and ignore the others as if they are meaningless to me. If I'm going to label myself according to my ancestry, I might as well call myself African-Native-European American, if that makes any sense. If a new testament to the Holy Bible was created today, I doubt that I'd be referred to as an African American. More likely I would be described as an American followed by details of the structure of my body.
Use whatever you want.
By the way I'm "caucasian" and "American", but I most often say I'm French-Canadian since that's my heritage.
