Why are all main female characters in books very pretty?
I love reading. But why in most books do the female characters either have to be very pretty and have the perfect figure (even if they themselves don't know it) or these characters are negative or old.
Does anybody know any books where the main female character is a normal-looking, not super-model and maybe not very attractive girl?
Thanks!
Because beauty is associated with goodness, people relate to a good and beautiful character, they feel sorry and glad for them more easily.
Jane Eyre as someone said below, is a good example, its a great novel and Jane herself was described as very plain, even ugly.
Also 'I capture the castle' by Dodie Smith, the main character in that has a beautiful older sister but she herself is quite plain. Interesting question!
